The science · How ProfilEd thinks

Every sentence it says to you is a claim. Claims need evidence.

Most AI responds every time you ask. ProfilEd is designed to stay quiet until it has earned the right to speak. This page shows exactly how it decides, including the real numbers, and the parts we haven’t built yet.

The central principle

Precision, not volume.

“The product earns the right to speak by the completeness and accuracy of its model of the person. Every output — email, signal, curriculum recommendation, check-in opening — is a claim. Claims require evidence. Evidence requires confidence. Confidence requires accumulated, cross-validated data.”

ProfilEdFrom ProfilEd’s internal architecture spec1
  1. DataWhat you said and did, session after session
  2. ConfidenceHas it shown up enough times, consistently?
  3. EvidenceIs it backed by more than words?
  4. ClaimOnly now does ProfilEd say it to you

“A product that speaks rarely but precisely builds a different kind of relationship than one that speaks often and is sometimes off. ProfilEd’s moat is precision, not volume.”

Three questions

Three questions it keeps asking about you.

1

What should I say, and when?

What you’re wrestling with now. Whether you’re in a state to be challenged. What you left open last time.

  • The hardest observations are saved for when you’ve been finishing your sessions, a sign you’re growing, not avoiding.
  • No reminder emails within 6 hours of you using ProfilEd. You’re in the product, not your inbox.
  • It only invites you back if your last session had real substance in it.
2

What should I teach, and how?

Not just which gap you have, but how you learn. The same gap needs a different approach for different people.

  • Concepts you can name but can’t explain.
  • Whether you’re exploring a topic or skimming it.
  • Whether you think in abstractions or in examples.
3

What actually helps you come back?

Different people return for different reasons. ProfilEd is designed to learn which kind of reminder actually helps you, and to stop sending the kind that doesn’t.

  • Some people want to know what they left unresolved. Some want to see progress. Some want a question worth thinking about.
  • It reads which one fits you from how you talk across 3+ sessions, not from one.

What it pays attention to

What you say, how you say it, and what you do.

In 1868, F. C. Donders showed that how long someone takes to respond reveals the thinking in between.2 ProfilEd listens to more than your words.

What you say
  • The question you keep coming back to.
  • What you believe, and how sure you sound.
  • What you leave open at the end of a session.
  • Concepts you can name but can’t yet explain.
How you say it
  • Speaking pace in interviews: steady, or rushed.
  • Pauses before you answer.
  • Filler words and hedges: “kind of”, “basically”, “I mean”.
  • Tone.
What you do
  • How long you hesitate before each choice in a Story Quest.
  • Whether you finish the sessions you start.
  • Whether you explore a topic or skim it.
  • Your work in the Curriculum Graph and in teach-back.

None of these is a verdict on its own. A signal only becomes something ProfilEd says to you after it repeats, and passes the rules below.

How you learn

The same idea, taught three ways.

The curriculum doesn’t change. How it’s presented to you does: the difficulty of the opening question, whether you’re asked to explain, and how a next step is framed.

You learn best when it…So ProfilEd…What doesn’t work for you
“Shows me it worked for someone like me”Leads with evidence and real stakesGeneric “you should learn X”
“Shows me the milestone”Makes progress concrete: “at this step you’ll be able to do Y”Vague outcomes and no visible progression
“Shows me why”Asks you to explain and connect ideas, Feynman-styleSurface-level content with no depth

It only decides which of these fits you once it has seen the same signal in three or more sessions. Until then, it doesn’t guess.

What it knows, and how sure it is

It keeps a confidence level on everything it believes about you.

Example: someone six sessions in

  • What you’re working throughHow many substantial sessions, and how consistent they are
    High
  • How you learnConfirmed across sessions, not inferred from one
    Medium
  • Which way you’re headingImproving, stable, circling or declining. Needs 5+ sessions
    Medium
  • What brings you backWhich kind of reminder actually helps
    Low

Every output checks these levels first. Low confidence means it doesn’t make that kind of claim yet.

What it’s allowed to say, session by session

  1. Session 1
A simple, open opening question. It doesn’t pretend to know you yet.
  2. Session 2+
A personal opening question, built from what you left open last time.Only if your last session was within 48 hours. Otherwise it goes back to an open question rather than assume.
  3. Session 3+
It can name a pattern in how you approach things. The pattern has to show up in at least 3 sessions, and the AI’s wording has to pass validation.
  4. Session 4+
A weekly reflection on your week.Needs at least 4 substantial sessions that week.
  5. Session 5+
It can say which way you’re heading, and when you’re ready for harder challenges.Needs 5+ sessions, and you finishing most of what you start (over 70%).
  6. Session 10+
Your two-week arc, and “you keep circling this.”Needs 10+ sessions. “Circling” is only said if your recent sessions are more than 85% alike.
  7. Session 14+
A prediction of your next milestone.Only if your pace has been steady for three weeks or more, not just this week.

At any session count: “You’ve resolved this” is never claimed from what you said alone. It needs evidence from your practice.

For the technically curious

The confidence rules, in full.

These are the real thresholds each kind of output has to pass before it reaches you.

Before ProfilEd says……it needs
Your check-in opening questionBuilt from your last session only if that session was within 48 hours. Otherwise, an open question.
Your daily question by emailMedium confidence or higher in what you’re working through, and the question has to be a genuine question.
An invitation to come backYour last session had real substance: it has to clear a minimum quality score.
Naming a pattern in how you thinkSeen in 3+ sessions, high confidence, and the AI’s output passes validation.
Your weekly arc4+ substantial sessions this week, good average quality across them, and the output passes validation.
Your two-week arcHigh confidence, based on 10+ sessions, and the things you’ve been working through are genuinely different from each other.
“You keep circling this”Your direction reads as circling, your recent sessions are more than 85% alike, and 10+ sessions in total.
A milestone predictionYour pace has been steady for 3+ weeks, not just this one.
“You’ve resolved this”Confirmed by your work in the Curriculum Graph. Never claimed from language alone.
A curriculum recommendationOnly once it knows how you learn best.

say it⇔inputs are real∧output passes checks∧confidence ≥ what this claim needs

The quality gate

Three questions before anything reaches you.

  1. Are the inputs real?A genuine signal from your sessions, not a generic phrase or a system error.✕ Nothing sent
  2. Is the AI’s output valid?Specific to you, the right length, no generic language.✕ Nothing sent
  3. Is the confidence sufficient? The level this kind of claim requires.✕ Nothing sent
  4. Then, and only thenIt reaches you.

“If any answer is no: log the reason, send nothing, never degrade to a fallback.”

“It is not defensive code. It is the product’s epistemic standard — the code expression of ‘we only say what we know.’” — ProfilEd’s architecture spec, on the quality gate

What it keeps

A record of how you think, not a badge.

Everything ProfilEd concludes about you can be traced back to what you actually said and did.

  • Transcriptsof your sessions, so any conclusion can be checked against the words behind it.
  • How your thinking has moved: beliefs, open questions and the threads you keep returning to, session by session.
  • Your reflectionsand the one specific next step each check-in ends with.
  • A proof recordfor every concept you’ve proved: a unique ID, the date, the score and a hash that identifies the record, kept in My Unified Journey.
  • A link you controlto share your record. Nothing is shared unless you share it.
  • For institutions: session data exports to CSV for assurance-of-learning reporting.

Not all mistakes cost the same

The cost of being wrong isn’t symmetric.

“Being wrong about a curriculum recommendation costs a session. Being wrong about a pattern insight costs the relationship.”

ProfilEdFrom ProfilEd’s internal architecture spec
Lower barA topic to study nextWrong costs you one session
Higher barA weekly reflectionWrong costs some trust
Highest barAn observation about youWrong costs the relationship

So the more personal the claim, the more evidence it needs.

Honest limits

What we haven’t built yet.

The first two are the gaps our own architecture document names as the next things to build. The third is already under way.

  • How quickly you go from “met it” to “can explain it.”We know which concepts you’ve visited. We don’t yet reliably record whether each attempt to teach a concept back passed or failed. Until we do, we won’t tell you “you’ve visited this three times and still can’t explain it,” even though that’s exactly the kind of precise, true claim we want to make.
  • Which reminder actually brought you back.We don’t yet connect a specific reminder to your next session. So today, how we choose a reminder for you is an educated guess from how you talk, not a lesson learned from what worked. We’d rather tell you that.
  • Tracing back to the missing foundation, automatically.Today the Curriculum Graph shows you what each topic depends on. We’re building the part that, when you’re stuck, works out which foundation is missing and takes you there first. Until it ships, finding the root is something you and ALICE do together.

“These two gaps [the first two above] are what turn ProfilEd from a system that makes intelligent guesses into a system that learns whether its guesses were right. The data wins over the theory.”

ProfilEdFrom ProfilEd’s internal architecture spec

The standard

Four questions every feature has to answer.

  1. What does the system actually know about this person right now?
  2. How confident is it?
  3. Does that confidence justify saying this?
  4. What does it cost if it’s wrong?

“This is the intelligence quest. Not ‘how do we send more personalized emails.’ But ‘how do we build a complete enough model of each person that everything the product says is earned.’”

ProfilEdFrom ProfilEd’s internal architecture spec

“Do not say that for which you lack adequate evidence.”
