So the value of the record is not volume. It is the structure around the evidence. A reviewer—career services, a mentor, an employer—should understand what the learner was trying to do, how they practised, what changed after feedback, and what they are ready to work on next.
A portfolio can be a gallery. A career evidence record is a reviewable path: goal → practice context → attempts → artifacts → feedback → reflection → next action. For external trust, add the standards layer lightly: issuer, criteria, date, results, linked evidence—the shape Open Badges 3.0 and Comprehensive Learner Record (CLR) 2.0 already describe.

Include feedback and reflection
The attempt without the reaction is half a story. Feedback shows what the learner heard, what they chose to change, and what still needs work.
Reflection should be short and concrete. OECD’s PIAAC work has long flagged the limits of self-reported skill scales; triangulation helps. A reflection is not a self-rated expertise claim. Keep it tied to the attempt.
The best reflections usually answer three questions:
- What did I learn from this attempt?
- What changed after feedback?
- What will I do differently next time?

If Friday’s review ends with “looks good,” the record still fails. The next step has to be visible—another practice block, a stronger artifact, a mentor conversation, a tighter goal, or a project aimed at the target role.
SHRM’s same skills-first study found organisations that know how to assess skill proficiency more often meet financial goals (63% vs 51%), and project-based assessments were tied to lower turnover (46% vs 34% reporting low or very low turnover).
